“Armageddon daily”
18 04 2008This wonderfully informative explanation by Raza Rumi about one of Faiz’s ghazals should be read by any lover of poetry.
Woh buton ne dalay hain waswasay ke dilon se khauf-e-Khuda gaya
Woh parri hain roz qayamatain, kekhayal-e-roz-e-jaza gaya
(So much) cynicism (waswasa also means confusion; uncertainty) is created by idols that fear of God has vanished from hearts.
(Because People) have gone through Armageddon daily the thought of the Day of Judgment is gone.
I recently came back to the news world after taking a hiatus to preserve my sanity. What I found is news of food riots breaking out in Haiti/Bangladesh/Brazil, people in the US losing their houses because of the bust-up of sub-prime mortgages, US workers struggling to survive as they get fewer work hours, mudslinging politics as usual (I’m not firmly planted on the O bandwagon), a war the continues with no end in sight….”Armageddon daily”, indeed.
I’m going back in hiding and not reading the news. Instead, I’ll be listening to this:
Rabba merai haal da mehram thu (God, you are the healer of my condition). Once again, Raza has a great post about the meaning.
MashaAllah, it does seem to be “Armageddon daily.” I struggle every day to find a balance between getting enough news to be informed but not enough to leave me in tears and not able to cope. Then I go look at my flowers to remind my self that there is still beauty in life.
I do the same! I read some news, and then I listen to Abida Parveen. Have to keep balanced somehow!
